Short Story: Cyber’s Ghost Part Ten

Jared sat back down on Jade’s bed and patted the spot beside him.

“Tanisha Parsons, is my age,”

Jade gasped.

“Let me finish, she had a rough childhood from what I’ve read of her of school reports –”

“You hacked the school system?!” Jade said impressed.

“Jade!” He said exasperated, but he couldn’t help but smile at her surprise.

She put a hand over her mouth and gestured for him to continue.

“Anyway, she struggles at school, because she lives with her aunt, her Mum’s sister, because her Mum lives in America, they Skype, but from the e-mails she really misses her Mum, her Dad works on an oil plant somewhere, but they seem close from the e-mails. She is really lonely, her aunt works long hours at the hospital. She doesn’t have many friends at school; the teachers describe her as ‘troubled’.” Jared finished.

“You found all that out?” Jade said after a moment of silence.

Jared nodded.

“Wow,” Jade breathed.

They sat in silence for a while, and even though Jared knew his sister would never let it go, he almost hoped for it, almost, having searched through her life, he almost understood why Tanisha was so hateful, she was unhappy and lonely, so she acted out, but she had gone too far, Salma was in hospital, and Tanisha had put her there.

“I still want to punish her, but…” Jade hesitated. “It won’t be as harsh.”

Jared nodded. “What’s the plan?”
